Do you know the difference between virtual and augmented reality?
Look no further, let us explain…
Virtual reality (VR) is the creation of a virtual world that users can interact with. This virtual world is designed in such a way that users find it difficult to tell the difference between what is real and what is not. VR is based upon a complete simulation of a real world environment which the user can explore and interact with by means of a head mounted display (HMD) and input device, e.g. data glove, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, Samsung Gear VR and the HTC Vive. The user totally immerses themselves in this artificial environment.
There are many applications of virtual reality across sectors, such as the military, education, healthcare, entertainment, fashion, media, film and construction, but irrespective of the use, VR produces a set of data which is then used to develop new models, training methods, communication and interaction.
Augmented reality (AR) is technology that combines virtual reality with the real world. The current world of augmented reality deals with live video imagery which is digitally enhanced with computer generated graphics. With AR, the user sees the real world extended by the addition of computer generated images which are overlaid on various objects within the real world.
AR is essentially displayed via HMD (e.g Google glass, MS Hololens), handheld devices (e.g iphone) or spatial display, which contains software that recognises the images and helps to displays those onto the objects.
The application of AR is broad. It can be used in a number of sectors such as automotive, medical, navigation, entertainment, sightseeing, military, maintenance and repair, gaming, advertising and promotion, etc.
Imagine using AR to diagnose a problem with your car, your health or tour your favourite city… the possibilities really are endless!!
