How CDL and NashTech continue to transform the InsurTech landscape
Industry
Introduction
Since 2020, NashTech has been a trusted partner of CDL. We spoke with CEO Nigel Phillips and CTO Rob Trueman about their business challenges and why they continue to rely on NashTech as their technology partner.
CDL is a UK-based technology firm specialising in innovative software solutions for the UK insurance sector. CDL has been at the forefront of transforming the insurance industry through technology and their client portfolio includes Co-op Insurance, RAC Insurance, Sainsbury’s Bank, and Swinton Insurance.
With globally recognised cloud capabilities, it is an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) member of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN), delivering innovative and resilient solutions for high volume retail operations. Its ecosystem provides a global insurance blueprint, with fully componentised policy administration and core insurance systems and a suite of cloud-based data and digital services available through powerful APls, connected hubs and platforms.
In 2022, it topped the UK InsurTech 50 ranking and was also included in the elite InsurTech 100 list of the most innovative organisations in the insurance industry worldwide.
NashTech has been working with CDL since 2020 and has built a close partnership. Recently, CDL’s executive team visited NashTech’s offshore development centres in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hanoi to meet the NashTech teams and join the Tet Lunar New Year parties.
We sat down with CDLs CEO, Nigel Phillips and Chief Technical Officer, Rob Trueman, to ask them about their challenges, staying competitive, and why they continue to choose NashTech as their technology partner…
Nigel, Rob, it’s great to welcome you to NashTech Vietnam. Tell us, what business challenges led you to partner with Nashtech?
Nigel: CDL is a UK-based InsurTech business and the UK insurance market is one of the most sophisticated and advanced marketplaces in the world. For us, the biggest challenge within the UK market is the ability to deliver quickly and take advantage of new technologies. When we looked at partnering with an outsource provider [to help us do this], we were looking for a partner that would be able to put together teams quickly and where we could keep those teams over the long term.
Rob: In the UK market, we saw challenges around how we scaled, how we attracted and managed the right skills, and utilised a global model for our expansion plans. We needed to find a partner that would help us gain access to the right skills to allow us to scale effectively.
We looked at many locations, different partners, and options, and we chose NashTech as our partner to help us scale.
How has the partnership helped you to overcome these challenges?
Rob: It’s giving us access to a lot of skills, and a lot more people, quickly. We know, that when we need to scale, we can come to NashTech and access those skills very, very quickly and efficiently.
We’re always learning, in terms of how NashTech works, how we can evolve our processes, and work more effectively with the NashTech teams.
How has your technology partnership with NashTech enabled you to stay competitive in the Insurtech market?
Nigel: Competitive advantage is one thing that our customers look for in the solutions that we provide to them, and they need that to win in our market. We’ve found that by working and collaborating with the NashTech teams, we’ve been able to stay competitive throughout our five-year partnership. Technology is ever-changing and we work very closely, both from an operational perspective and a strategic perspective.
Operationally, we rely on different elements of the partnership, the first one being governance, so that we have the right engagement and processes that ensure we work effectively together to deliver projects quickly. But we also look for that strategic view in terms of what’s changing and how can we adopt and adapt to take advantage of those innovations.
We have great relationships with the teams across the board and I think it’s that trust and insight that has built up over the long term that really sets NashTech apart for us.
What impresses you the most about NashTech’s team in Vietnam?
Nigel: The thing that impresses me most about NashTech’s teams in Vietnam is the way that education is a critical feature. We at CDL always adopt a learning mindset, and we see that in the NashTech Vietnam teams too, and that’s what we really love about it.
Rob: I think the culture, work ethic, and the approach that people have, as well as the drive for education and skills, and the attention to detail regarding the quality of the work really comes through.
How did you go about choosing NashTech as your technology partner?
Rob: We looked at a lot of different location options across the UK, Europe, and beyond and we came out to Vietnam to see the NashTech setup. We were incredibly impressed with the culture and the approach that NashTech had and the culture in general, and it became an obvious choice for us.
How would you describe the journey of working together over the years?
Rob: It’s been a great journey. It’s all about change, iterating, and continuing to learn. We work closely with NashTech to understand new tooling, and new approaches, such as AI, and how we can both embed those things. It’s a continually evolving journey so we spend a lot of time looking at how we continue to evolve the relationship that we have, the skills, the technologies and it’s very much a partnership approach.
NashTech continues to support CDL as it continues to play a pivotal role in driving innovation within the insurance industry, delivering solutions that enhance consumer experiences and streamline operations for insurers.
